Project Description

The VolkerRailStoryJV secured the Hope Valley upgrade scheme that will remove bottlenecks on the rail line between Sheffield and Manchester. The scheme is estimated at £137million and will provide;

  • An additional track through Dore & Totley Station, this requires a second platform and bridge between the two platforms to allow passengers to board trains on the Hope Valley line to and from Sheffield extending the platform from 115m to 153m
  • An extension to the single track which links the Hope Valley line with the Midland Mainline to the west of Dore & Totley Station, which is used mainly by freight services
  • Construct a 1km passing loop alongside the existing railway to the east of Bamford station for passenger trains to overtake slower freight trains.
  • A new footbridge to the west of Hathersage station to replace an existing railway crossing

Key project milestones are scheduled as follows

  • Survey Work – April to October 2021
  • Site Establishment – Autumn/ Winter 2021
  • Construction Works – begins early 2022
  • Project Complete – Summer 2023

InoRail Ltd are contracted to provide all surveying services to support Grip 4 and Grip 5 design phases, this includes;

  • Establishment of a route wide Primary and Secondary Control network, between Manchester and Sheffield
  • Tertiary Control installation at intervention locations
  • Detailed Topographical Surveys
  • Route scan, utilising the GEDO Scan system
  • Static scanning of all Overbridges and Culverts
  • Platform and Structure gauging surveys
  • Utility / GPR Surveys
  • CCTV and drainage surveys
